On July 3, 2008, the Public Utility Commission of Texas approved SWEPCO’s request to allow the proposed John W. Turk, Jr. Power plant to serve the company’s 176,000 retail customers in East Texas and the Panhandle. News release 7-3-08.

In recent weeks, a new Austin-based group calling itself Texas Electric Ratepayers Alliance (TERA) has come into East Texas with a campaign against the plant. Also, a group of trade associations has written to legislators — using some TERA's latest arguments in opposition to the plant.

During the Commission proceedings, a group of industries known as Texas Industrial Electric Consumers (TIEC) and the Commission staff have formally opposed SWEPCO’s application.
