The 640-megawatt, lignite-fueled Pirkey Plant has been a mainstay of reliable and affordable power generation for East Texas, Northwest Louisiana and Southwest Arkansas for more than 30 years. As water in the man-made lake cools the plant, it stays warm for bass, catfish and other species of fish. This means year-round fishing for area anglers.
In early 2015, SWEPCO repaired the entrance road and public boat ramp on the Brandy Branch Reservoir, which is located five miles south of I-20 on FM 3251 (Exit #610). An additional gravel parking lot also was built for boaters. The dense shrubs and trees were cleared allowing better access for the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office and local game wardens making their rounds.
Partners in the project included Texas Parks & Wildlife, the Eastman Bass Club, Fisher of Men Club, Kilgore Bass Club and Weekenders Team Trail from Carthage.
Texas Parks & Wildlife has created fish habitats by sinking used Christmas trees in the cooling lake. In March 2015, it also released more than 7,000 nine-inch catfish into the reservoir.
