Large Transformer on Last Leg of Journey to Amos Plant

February 24, 2006

A large transformer destined for Appalachian Power’s John E. Amos Plant will pass through Huntington on Sunday, Feb. 26. The 160-ton piece of equipment will make its way through the city beginning around 9:00 a.m. on a dual-lane trailer that is 20-feet wide and 150-feet long. On Monday, the super-sized load will travel along State Route 2 to Point Pleasant. It will rest there until Sunday, March 5, when it will move along State Route 35 to the Amos Plant.

The transformer was manufactured in Canada by ABB, and came to Huntington by rail. Edwards Moving and Rigging, Inc., a heavy hauling company based in Shelbyville, Ky., is using highway transportation to get the transformer to its final destination.

When in operation, the transformer will raise electricity from the 26,000 volts at which it is produced at Amos to 765,000 volts at which it is carried across the company’s system of extra-high voltage (EHV) transmission lines.

Appalachian Power provides electricity to 1 million customers in Virginia, West Virginia and Tennessee.  It is a unit of American Electric Power, the nation’s largest electricity generator.  AEP owns more than 36,000 megawatts of generating capacity and is one of the nation’s largest electric utilities, with more than 5 million customers in 11 states.
