SWEPCO Advances Smart Meter Rollout in Louisiana: Empowering Residents with Energy Management Tools

April 29, 2025

Southwestern Electric Power Company (SWEPCO) is making significant strides in deploying smart meters across Louisiana, empowering residents to better manage their energy consumption and potentially lower their electric bills.

In a recent segment of SWEPCO’s Ways to Save video series, Brian Converse, manager of Advanced Metering Infrastructure, shared insights into the ongoing deployment and highlighted key features that customers can utilize to reduce their bills. Installations are currently underway in Mansfield, Shreveport, and Vivian, with plans to expand into Natchitoches this spring and conclude in Haughton.

“Smart meters provide real-time data, which empowers our customers to make informed decisions about their energy usage,” Converse explained. This technology allows users to closely monitor their consumption patterns, leading to more efficient energy use and potential cost savings.

One of the primary advantages of smart meters is the enhancement of the customer experience. Unlike traditional meters that require manual readings, smart meters automate the process, offering timely information. Customers can monitor their energy usage online or through the SWEPCO mobile app, enabling them to proactively adjust their consumption habits.

Converse noted that these devices facilitate better communication between SWEPCO and its customers, allowing for quicker identification of outages and issues.

“With outage detection, we will be able to restore that customer’s power a little bit quicker than normal,” he said.

Additionally, smart meters are equipped with remote monitoring capabilities. This allows SWEPCO to diagnose and resolve issues without requiring a technician to visit the home, ultimately saving both time and resources.
