Thank you for your patience.
We believe in the promise of clean energy.
Our long-range plans move us toward a cleaner energy future with more low-cost wind and solar energy as part of our diverse energy resource mix.
New wind farms are in operation or under construction today in north-central Oklahoma. They are tapping into some of the country’s best wind resources. These facilities are directly connected to the transmission grid that serves SWEPCO customers.
Together, the Sundance, Maverick and Traverse wind farms are called the North Central Energy Facilities, or North Central Wind.
The Sundance and Maverick wind farms began operation in April 2021 and September 2021, respectively. Traverse is expected to begin commercial operation in early 2022.
In 2020, the Arkansas, Louisiana and Oklahoma utility commissions approved our plans to purchase these facilities as construction is completed. SWEPCO will own 810 megawatts of the generating capacity. Our sister utility Public Service Co. of Oklahoma will own 675 megawatts.
Project Fact Sheet
The wind farms will help our Louisiana and Arkansas customers meet their own renewable energy and sustainability goals. (Learn more about the optional purchase of Renewable Energy Credits.) The additional renewable energy will make communities more competitive for economic development.
In addition to the environmental benefits of wind energy, Arkansas and Louisiana customers will save an estimated $2 billion over the 30-year expected life of the facilities.
Over the next eight years, we will reduce our coal generating capacity by almost 1,900 megawatts. SWEPCO retired more than 200 megawatts of older natural gas units in 2019 and 2020.
We have worked to balance the remaining life and economic viability of our coal-fueled generating units with other options for generating power, including renewable energy and natural gas.
We are committed to bringing more clean energy to the customers and communities we serve. Cleaner, more affordable energy to power our lives. A more robust economy. A powerful, boundless future.
SWEPCO has issued Requests for Proposals for 3,000 megawatts of wind energy and 300 megawatts of solar energy. Learn more.
