New wind farms are under construction today in north-central Oklahoma. They will tap into some of the country’s best wind resources. These facilities are directly connected to the transmission grid that serves SWEPCO customers.
Together, the Sundance, Maverick and Traverse wind farms are called the North Central Energy Facilities. In 2020, the Arkansas, Louisiana and Oklahoma utility commissions approved our plans to purchase these facilities when construction is complete in 2021 and 2022. SWEPCO will own 810 megawatts of the generating capacity. Our sister utility Public Service Co. of Oklahoma will own 675 megawatts.
The wind farms will help our Louisiana and Arkansas customers meet their own renewable energy and sustainability goals. They will make communities more competitive for economic development. In addition to the environmental benefits of wind energy, Arkansas and Louisiana customers will save an estimated $2 billion over the 30-year expected life of the facilities.
Over the next eight years, we will reduce our coal generating capacity by almost 1,900 megawatts. SWEPCO retired more than 200 megawatts of older natural gas units in 2019 and 2020.
We have worked to balance the remaining life and economic viability of our coal-fueled generating units with other options for generating power, including renewable energy and natural gas.
