March 16, 2023

Texarkana, Texas fire and police officials demonstrate the new fitness court as SWEPCO External Affairs Manager Jennifer Harland cheers them on.

TEXARKANA, Texas - With health reports showing limited physical activity among children and adults in their day-to-day lives, advocates for the newly opened Fitness Court hope to level the playing field and get people moving.

City leaders, chamber officials and other Texarkana area community residents joined together here Tuesday to officially host a ribbon cutting event to celebrate the newest addition to Spring Lake Park.

The National Campaign Fitness Court at Spring Lake Park in Texarkana, Texas, enables adults of all ages and abilities access to a free outdoor workout. The fitness court includes seven stations -- core, squat, push, lunge, pull, agility and bend and is designed to provide a full body workout in only seven minutes.

“It’s been our privilege to earn support from the AEP Foundation to partner with the City of Texarkana on an amazing addition that will benefit the residents of both sides of Texarkana – Arkansas and Texas.  It's great to see how this court can make an impact for so many residents and it’s wonderful that it’s located at one of our most beloved community parks,” said Jennifer Harland, External Affairs manager, SWEPCO.

Texarkana, Texas city leaders, chamber members and others gather to participate in a ribbon cutting ceremony to open a free fitness court made possible in part by the AEP Foundation at the recommendation of SWEPCO.

Funding for the Spring Lake Park installation included grants from the National Fitness Campaign, the city's parks capital improvement fund and AEP Foundation, at the recommendation of SWEPCO, presented the City of Texarkana with $50,000 for the fitness center, as well as an additional $50,000 to support programs for two community centers.

“This sponsorship builds on our longstanding commitment to wellness initiatives that positively impact all Texans,” said Robyn Weatherby, a National Fitness Campaign participant and project sponsor, Director, Enterprise National Accounts for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas.
