Renewable Energy Choice

SWEPCO Renewable Energy Choice is a voluntary program that provides you the opportunity to support renewable energy and meet your own sustainability and renewable energy goals.

Take the next step toward renewable energy

Renewable energy is already working for you as part of SWEPCO’s diverse energy resource mix. Now, with SWEPCO Renewable Energy Choice, you take another step forward with the purchase of Renewable Energy Credits (RECs).

How the Program Works:

  • You decide how much of your monthly electricity usage you want attributed to the program.
  • SWEPCO provides a corresponding amount of RECs from its designated wind or solar generation resources.
  • The REC cost of $.003578 per kWh (which is a decrease from the last rate of $.004012 per kWh) is added as a line item to your bill, if you are a subscribing customer. Example: For a home that uses 1,200 kWhs of energy per month, enrolled at 50% in the program, the REC cost would be about $2.14 per month (1,200 x 50% x .003578 = $2.14).
  • The RECs you purchase allow you to legally claim the environmental benefits of the renewable energy.
  • Once signed up in the program, an account will remain in the program until you request it be removed.

RECs are available to SWEPCO’s retail customers. Register for SWEPCO Renewable Energy Choice or read our FAQs if you’d like to learn more.

SWEPCO Renewable Energy Choice FAQs

SWEPCO Renewable Energy Choice is a voluntary program that provides you the opportunity to support renewable energy and meet your own sustainability and renewable energy goals through the purchase of Renewable Energy Credits (RECs).
When a renewable energy generator produces one megawatt-hour of electricity that is certified and sold into the electricity market, it produces a Renewable Energy Certificate, also known as a Renewable Energy Credit, or REC. That REC is the legal representation of the renewable energy generated, which then may be sold to a buyer, such as an individual or an organization. In this way, REC buyers are helping to support renewable energy.
When you purchase RECs through the SWEPCO Renewable Energy Choice program, you are encouraging the development of renewable energy. Your purchase will take place in addition to your regular monthly electric bill. You will not receive any additional electricity from your purchase of renewable energy, but you are helping to sustain a market for renewable power generation. You can also use the RECs toward your own sustainability and renewable energy goals.
  • You decide how much of your monthly electricity usage you want attributed to the program.

RECs are available to all SWEPCO retail customers.
RECs in the SWEPCO Renewable Energy Choice program come from designated renewable energy facilities owned by SWEPCO or under long-term renewable energy power purchase agreements.
Revenue from the sale of a REC will flow back into fuel cost savings for all customers in the state where the participating customer account is located.
