Electrical Safety Month: A Call for Awareness and Action

May 7, 2025

Dianna Tomlinson shares vital safety tips and highlights SWECO’s commitment to a safer community during Electrical Safety Month.

May is Electrical Safety Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about electrical hazards and promoting safety practices within our communities.

Recently, Dianna Tomlinson, director, Safety and Health, at Southwestern Electric Power Company, shared her insights on the importance of electrical safety during an episode of Ways to Save video series.

Dianna emphasized that safety is not merely a priority; it is a core value at SWEPCO, that guides the actions of every employee every day. Given the numerous hazards faced by workers in the field, ensuring their safety, along with that of their families and coworkers, is a top concern.

“Safety is the most important thing when it comes to doing electrical work, and we want to make sure our employees work safe; that we’re looking out for our coworkers and also for the public,” Tomlinson said.

She said electrical safety month is a time to engage and educate our communities about the vital importance of electrical safety.

It serves as a reminder for everyone to maintain a safe distance from power lines, always call 811 before digging, and adhere to safety guidelines when using ladders near power lines.

The conversation also touched on how viewers can contribute to electrical safety in their own communities.  Dianna said it’s important that the public keep a distance when they see SWEPCO crews working.
