Heartwarming Initiative Connects Mount Vernon Middle School Students with Local Linemen

May 19, 2025

Fifth-grade students at Mount Vernon Middle School wrote letters of appreciation to the lineworkers serving their community.

Mount Vernon, Texas – In a heartwarming initiative, fifth-grade students at Mount Vernon Middle School engaged in a unique learning experience that connected them with the essential work of linemen. Guided by their teacher, Ms. Susan Aulsbrook—who is the mother-in-law of Mt. Pleasant District lineman Kevin Flores—the class explored the critical role electricity plays in their lives and the vital contributions of linemen in maintaining power for their community.

To honor the dedication of linemen like Kevin, the students wrote heartfelt letters of appreciation, highlighting the significance of power in their lives and the essential services provided by linemen.

"This was a fun day for the students to meet the people who keep the power flowing and to learn about careers in the industry," said Ms. Aulsbrook.

Recently, several SWEPCO’s Blake Hill, Distribution System Supervisor (DSS), Mt. Pleasant, TX District (which includes support and coverage for Mount Vernon); and linemen Kevin Flores, Wyatt LaVergne and Braden Spigener visited the classroom to answer questions and share insights about their careers. The day was enriched by a surprise appearance from Louie the Lightning Bug, reinforcing the importance of safety and energy awareness.

“It meant a lot to us personally to have the Mount Vernon Middle School students share their letters of appreciation for the work we do,” said Blake Hill, DSS. “We loved meeting the students and hearing how our work matters to them.”
