Smart Meters Bring Faster Service and Real Time Energy Insights to Arkansas

January 8, 2026

A major technology upgrade is underway across Arkansas as smart meters begin rolling out to homes and businesses statewide. In a recent Ways to Save segment, Region Communication Manager Amy Schlesing highlighted how these new meters are giving customers more control, more information, and more reliable service than ever before.

Real-Time Energy Information at Your Fingertips

One of the biggest benefits of smart meters is the ability for customers to see their energy usage in real time. Instead of waiting for a monthly bill, customers can track how much electricity they use throughout the day.

This makes it easier to:

  • Spot sudden spikes in usage
  • Identify appliances or habits driving higher bills
  • Make quick adjustments to reduce energy costs

With clearer insight, customers can act sooner — and often save money in the process.

Faster Outage Detection and Restoration

Smart meters also improve reliability. When an outage occurs, the meter sends an instant alert, allowing crews to pinpoint the issue faster.

As Amy explained, this technology helps the utility respond more proactively: “We’re able to help those customers in a more proactive way by being alerted to issues.”

The result is quicker restoration times and fewer unknown outages.

Proactive Customer Support

Because smart meters communicate directly with the utility, they can also flag potential problems before they become bigger issues. This allows teams to reach out to customers sooner and provide support when it’s needed most.

How Customers Will Be Notified

As installations continue across Arkansas, customers will receive notifications in several ways:

  • A doorhanger once the meter is installed or a doorhanger requesting the customer to schedule an appointment if special access is needed
  • Phone messages
  • Postcards

These notifications ensure customers know what to expect and when installation will occur.

A Smarter, More Efficient Energy Future

Smart meters are more than just new equipment — they’re a foundation for a modern, efficient, and customer focused energy system. With real time data, faster outage response, and improved communication, Arkansas customers will see meaningful benefits from this upgrade for years to come.
