At SWEPCO, protecting the environment is part of how we power communities today and for generations to come. This Earth Day, we’re celebrating conservation and inviting you to be part of something meaningful and fun.

Across our fleet, teams use advanced control systems to manage emissions, monitor air quality, modernize operations, and conserve water and wildlife. At the same time, renewable resources like the Sundance, Maverick, Traverse, Diversion, and Wagon Wheel wind sites, along with the Rocking R Solar facility, help reduce our overall environmental footprint while continuing to deliver reliable energy.

One powerful example of environmental stewardship close to home is the Eagle Watch and Nature Trail at the Flint Creek Power Plant near Gentry, Arkansas. What began in 1999 as a grassroots effort led by plant employee Terry Stanfield and local Boy Scouts has since grown into a 65-acre public nature space enjoyed year-round by families, students, and outdoor enthusiasts. 

Each winter, hundreds of American bald eagles gather at SWEPCO Lake, drawn by a thriving habitat supported by warm waters and abundant wildlife. The trails, pavilions, and outdoor education programs reflect our commitment to caring for the land and sharing it with the community.

As highlighted in the video, Eagle Watch is more than a place. It’s a reminder that when we invest in the environment, we create spaces that inspire learning, renewal, and pride.

To mark this special place, we’ve added a stunning hand-carved wooden bald eagle to the Eagle Watch Nature Trail at SWEPCO Lake. Special thanks to Colt LaRue, Chainsaw Artist, for bringing this incredible piece to life. With hundreds of bald eagles returning to the lake each winter, this new addition feels right at home—but it still needs a name.
