Safeguarding Against Scams: Essential Tips for Consumers

August 25, 2025

As scammers get more creative and try new ways to target residents, SWEPCO’s Mark Robinson is helping make sure Texas SWEPCO customers are aware of how to recognize the signs of a scam. In a recent segment of Ways to Save, Mark Robinson, External Affairs manager in Longview, shares effective strategies for recognizing and avoiding utility scams.

Robinson highlighted the common tactics used by scammers, particularly the impersonation of utility representatives. These fraudsters often demand immediate payment or request personal information while posing as legitimate service providers. One alarming trend he noted is scammers targeting vulnerable populations, such as those who speak English as a second language, the elderly or a restaurant right before a lunch rush.

"Scammers often use high-pressure tactics to manipulate individuals into making hasty decisions," Robinson said. "It’s important to know SWEPCO will never call customers demanding immediate payment. If you receive a suspicious call, email, or in-person visit, please hang up, shut the door or delete the email and call us at 1.888.216.3523 to verify the status of your account.”

One effective way for customers to enhance their security and maintain a strong connection with SWEPCO is by keeping their contact information up to date. It’s important to ensure SWEPCO has your current cell phone number, home phone number, and email address.

Robinson encouraged customers to report scam attempts to SWEPCO and law enforcement. SWEPCO tracks scam attempts and works with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to identify and prosecute scammers.

Educating our customers is the first step in preventing scams and protecting their personal information," Robinson said. “By increasing awareness and remaining vigilant, customers can better safeguard themselves against fraudulent schemes.”
