Enhancing Reliability Through Tree Trimming

August 29, 2025

In the latest episode of the Ways to Save series, Matt Tarpley, Interim Region Forestry Supervisor, talks about the ways tree trimming efforts are enhancing electric service reliability across SWEPCO’s service areas. Matt outlined the company's comprehensive approach to vegetation management, which includes ground-based tree trimming, manual bucket work, and aerial tree trimming.

One notable technique discussed was aerial tree trimming, which employs a 33-foot saw suspended from a helicopter. This method allows crews to safely trim trees that are too close to power lines, particularly in difficult-to-access, heavily wooded areas. This year, AEP successfully implemented aerial trimming operations in Louisiana, demonstrating a proactive stance on vegetation management.

“We trimmed a good bit of mileage this year with it and looking forward to the success our customers will experience with reliability,” Tarpley said.

Matt emphasized the importance of safety during these operations, urging residents to maintain a safe distance from work areas. SWEPCO crews conduct thorough hazard assessments before beginning work, ensuring that debris is managed effectively and safely.

The benefits of tree trimming extend beyond aesthetics; they significantly enhance the safety and reliability of electric service. By managing tree growth near power lines, SWEPCO can reduce the likelihood of outages, especially during storms. Tarpley said that these efforts ultimately benefit everyone within the territory.

Matt Tarpley, Interim Region Forestry Supervisor, details how tree trimming efforts enhance electric service reliability across SWEPCO's service areas.

“We encourage everyone to keep a safe distance from work sites, whether it's aerial tree trimming or bucket crews, so our teams can do their job and improve service reliability,” he said.
