SWEPCO to Conduct Proactive Electric System Inspections Using Innovative Technology

October 16, 2026

Over the next several weeks, SWEPCO will partner with AiDash to perform proactive inspections of its electric delivery system using Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensors mounted on vehicles and drones. These sensors enable SWEPCO to collect detailed data that helps identify vegetation – down to a single tree branch – that may be too close to equipment and needs trimming, as well as equipment conditions that may require maintenance, repair or replacement to prevent future outages and reduce wildfire risks.

Customers in the Texas counties of Hall, Collingsworth, Donley, Wheeler and Childress may see these drones and vehicles in their neighborhoods as they capture these detailed images.

The inspections are designed to identify potential problem areas before they affect service, giving SWEPCO greater visibility into the system and help prioritize maintenance and repairs.. The data collected will support efforts to enhance reliability, reduce the frequency of outages, and restore power more quickly when disruptions occur.

“Trees and vegetation are among the leading causes of power outages, especially during severe weather,” said Stefan Urian, distribution risk and reliability manager. “LiDAR helps us pinpoint potential trouble spots across our system so we can take action before an interruption occurs. The result is a more resilient grid and better service for our customers.”

SWEPCO serves more than half a million customers across three states through an extensive network of more than 25,941 miles of distribution lines. Regular inspections and system upgrades are essential to maintaining safe, dependable electric service.

SWEPCO appreciates the community’s understanding as crews and partners carry out this important work.
