SWEPCO Foundation Contributes $5,000 to Northwestern State University for STEM Outreach

January 16, 2026

The SWEPCO Foundation awarded a $5,000 grant to Northwestern State University (NSU) to support STEM outreach efforts designed to inspire the next generation of innovators across North Louisiana.

“At SWEPCO, we invest in STEM education and workforce development to fuel curiosity and foster the innovators who will shape the energy industry and beyond,” said Michael Corbin, SWEPCO external affairs manager. “From classrooms to careers, we’re helping people gain the skills to power a brighter future for us all.”

The funding will help NSU expand programs that spark interest in science, technology, engineering, and math, building pathways for students to explore careers that keep our communities strong and our energy future bright.

NSU’s School of STEM will host a regional N-SIDE STEM Day for high school juniors and seniors and purchase reusable STEM “edutainment” kits for future events. These resources will expand access to hands-on science and engineering activities that spark curiosity, creativity, and career interest while strengthening STEM literacy and workforce readiness.

NSU’s outreach programming is led by Dr. Chris Lyles, director of NSU’s School of STEM and supported by NSU’s Office of Economic Development and University Advancement. The programming plays a critical role in preparing students for high-demand careers while fostering innovation in local communities.

“We are excited to partner with the SWEPCO Foundation to expand hands-on STEM learning opportunities across our region,” Dr. Lyles said. “Our shared commitment ensures students are prepared for future careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.”

Strong STEM education is essential for continued economic growth in our region. SWEPCO and the SWEPCO Foundation are proud to be a power for good in the places we call home and are ready to support education, drive economic development, and help prepare the future workforce that will keep North Louisiana thriving.
