Building a Culture of Energy Efficiency
The opportunity
Rockline Industries, a global manufacturer of private label wet wipes and other consumer products, has a longstanding commitment to reducing its environmental footprint. The company has made several energy-efficient equipment upgrades to its Northwest Arkansas facility in recent years, but was looking for more sustainable solutions to maintain their low-cost, high-volume business model.
They found it in SWEPCO’s Strategic Energy Management (SEM) offering, a new standard for implementing a culture of energy efficiency through low- and no-cost behavioral and operational changes.
The projects
SWEPCO’s SEM team began with a two-hour onsite assessment to review the facility’s equipment and production process. The assessment uncovered 37 energy-saving opportunities, eight of which were implemented within two weeks. These included ongoing behavioral changes like turning off vent fans when not in use as well as low-cost upgrades like repairing photocells in outdoor lighting, installing timers on conveyor belts, and adding occupancy sensors to lighting equipment.
The results
After a year of continuous improvements, the Rockline Industries staff reduced the facility’s annual energy use by 304,000 kWh a year. Combined with incentives from SWEPCO, those energy efficiency improvements add up to $29,000 in cost savings each year. As additional opportunities for improvement continue to be identified during monthly check-ins with the SWEPCO SEM team, the savings show no sign of slowing down.
