Illuminate Your Savings: The Smart Meter Advantage

March 12, 2024

SWEPCO's commitment to grid modernization ensures a more reliable and efficient power grid, embracing a diverse generation portfolio to ensure power is always flowing when you need it and investing in technological advancements.

Smart meters will revolutionize the way you manage your energy usage and interact with SWEPCO. With real-time data and improved customer service, customers can take control of their energy consumption and save both energy and money. An advanced digital meter, also known as a smart meter, is an integral part of the grid modernization effort by SWEPCO. These smart meters utilize advanced metering and secure wireless technology to establish communication between the meter and the power company. This allows for timely and accurate meter reading data.

One of the primary benefits of a smart meter is its ability to provide customers information on how energy is used at their home or business. SWEPCO’s integration of new home energy management tools allow smart meters to offer customers real-time data on how they use energy. With this information, customers gain more control over their electricity consumption, enabling them to make informed decisions to save money by reducing the amount of energy they use.

In addition to empowering customers to make decisions that impact their household budgets smart meters also bring improvements to the service they receive. Smart meters can automatically detect power outages which can enable quicker repairs to get your power flowing again.

Already, more than 111 million safe, secure and reliable smart meters have been installed in the United States, and SWEPCO is now bringing these benefits to you.

Smart meter deployment is already underway in Texas and Louisiana. In Texas, installations are almost complete and should be finished by the end of the year. In Louisiana, installations are occurring in the Bossier City, Shreveport, and Hornbeck areas of the state. SWEPCO plans to replace over 234,000 meters in Louisiana by 2025. Over the next several years, SWEPCO will continue these efforts to replace soon-to-be obsolete technology, or outdated meters, with smart meters in homes and businesses. Customers will receive alerts via mail, email, and phone before the installation of their smart meters, ensuring a smooth transition.

The benefits of smart meters are numerous:

  • Real-time energy monitoring eliminates the need to wait for monthly bills, allowing customers to track their energy consumption in 15-minute intervals. This level of detail enables customers to manage their energy usage, set energy goals, and budget accordingly.

  • The billing process is simplified, as smart meters eliminate estimated bills and the need for meter readers to disturb your homes. Accurate billing is provided through constant usage reporting, without inconveniencing customers.

  • Efficiency is another advantage of smart meters. The wireless technology used by these meters allows customers to have their electric service connected at home, resulting in cost savings. Smart meters emit radio frequencies (RFs) to communicate at levels that are well below those produced by common household devices like cell phones or microwaves. SWEPCO ensures that its smart meters adhere to the limits set by the Federal Communications Commission.
