One of the primary benefits of a smart meter is its ability to provide customers information on how energy is used at their home or business. SWEPCO’s integration of new home energy management tools allow smart meters to offer customers real-time data on how they use energy. Smart meter deployment is already underway in Texas and Louisiana. In Texas, installations are almost complete and should be finished by the end of the year. Over the next several years, SWEPCO will continue these efforts to replace soon-to-be obsolete technology, or outdated meters, with smart meters in homes and businesses. Customers will receive alerts via mail, email, and phone before the installation of their smart meters, ensuring a smooth transition.

Smart meters emit radio frequencies (RFs) to communicate at levels that are well below those produced by common household devices like cell phones or microwaves.
