SWEPCO Announces Electric Transmission Investment in Henderson Area

AEP Southwestern Electric Power Company (SWEPCO) plans to rebuild about six miles of existing 69,000-volts transmission line in Henderson. The estimated $9 million Evenside – Northwest Henderson Transmission Line Project will ensure continued reliability to the area and will provide vital support for local economic development.

SWEPCO will host a come-and-go informational open house on Tuesday, March 7 between 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Northside Intermediate School located at 800 North Van Buren in Henderson. Doors will open at 5:00 p.m. and visitors can arrive at any time during the open house to learn project details, look at maps and speak with members of the project team.

The project involves replacing aging wooden poles and transmission line with single steel poles The transmission line begins at the company’s Evenside Substation located off of South Evenside Street. It then leaves the station and heads northwest around the west side of Henderson, paralleling Loop 571 for a portion of the line route. The line ends at the Northwest Henderson Substation located off of Highway 322.

Right-of-way agents will begin contacting landowners along the existing route to discuss the need for land surveying and securing property easements. Property owners may also see SWEPCO crews and contractors working in the area prior to the open house. They are gathering pre-engineering data to identify underground utilities. Crews will be accessing areas within existing company-owned easements and will be in contact with all affected landowners.

Construction is expected to begin this fall and be completed by Summer 2018. The need to replace the aging infrastructure was determined by Southwest Power Pool (SPP), the regional transmission organization responsible for overseeing the electric transmission grid in this area of Texas. SPP operates under federal mandate to ensure reliable supplies of power, adequate transmission infrastructure and reasonable wholesale electricity rates.
