As East Texas continues to attract new businesses and investment, conversations about infrastructure, energy and workforce readiness are becoming increasingly important. Those topics were front and center July 15 at the Longview Infrastructure Summit, hosted by the Longview Chamber of Commerce.

The event brought together municipal officials, business leaders and industry experts to discuss the opportunities and challenges associated with regional growth. Representing SWEPCO was Mark Robinson, External Affairs Manager, who served as a panelist and shared insights on the role electric infrastructure plays in supporting economic development.

During the discussion, Robinson addressed the impact that major new energy users, including data centers, can have on the electric system. As large industrial and commercial customers evaluate locations for expansion, electric demand can increase significantly, requiring utilities to strategically plan for future growth while maintaining reliable service for existing customers.

"As companies bring major investments and new jobs to our region, our commitment remains the same: delivering dependable energy at the lowest costs possible to every customer," Robinson said. "Through proactive planning and strategic investments, we're working to ensure our system can support growth while maintaining the reliability and resiliency our customers expect."

Robinson discussed how SWEPCO works closely with economic developers, local leaders and prospective customers to anticipate future energy needs and make informed investments in infrastructure. He emphasized that preparing for growth today helps ensure communities can continue to thrive tomorrow.

The conversation also focused on balancing economic development with reliability. Robinson noted that SWEPCO's approach is aligned with AEP's Powering Fairness commitment.

"We are guided by AEP's Powering Fairness commitment, working to provide reliable, value-driven energy in a way that benefits all customers and communities we serve," Robinson said. "As our region grows, it's important that we continue creating opportunities while ensuring the benefits of that growth are shared across the communities we serve."

In addition to discussing infrastructure and energy demand, Robinson highlighted SWEPCO's partnership with Texas State Technical College (TSTC), which is helping build a pipeline of skilled workers for the future.

"As our industry evolves and demand for electricity continues to grow, developing a strong workforce is just as important as building infrastructure," Robinson said. "Our partnership with TSTC is helping prepare the next generation of lineworkers with the training and skills needed to support our customers and communities for years to come."
