As SWEPCO marks its 113th anniversary, we reflect on a rich history that began on June 29, 1912. In a few recent segments of Ways to Save, President and COO Brett Mattison shared insights into the company's journey from its founding to becoming a leader in reliable and affordable energy.
A Journey Through Time
SWEPCO's story began with the vision of the Dawes brothers – Rufus, Henry and Charles – who founded Southwestern Gas & Electric. This pioneering spirit led to its acquisition by Middle West Utilities in 1925, ultimately becoming part of Central and South West. By the 1950s, the company rebranded as Southwestern Electric Power Company, setting the stage for future growth.
Brett emphasized a notable milestone this year in celebration of the company's founding. He mentioned that the historic red neon sign atop the Arsenal Hill Power Plant, which had been dark for decades, now illuminates with modern LED lights.
Adapting to Change: The Evolution of Energy Generation
Throughout its history, SWEPCO has demonstrated remarkable adaptability. Initially engaged in diverse interests like ice production and natural gas, the company transitioned to coal in response to the energy shortages of the 1970s. This strategic pivot led to the construction of two major coal plants: Flint Creek in Northwest Arkansas and Welsh in East Texas.
The John W. Turk, Jr. Power Plant in Fulton, Arkansas, represents SWEPCO's commitment to clean energy, utilizing advanced ultra-supercritical technology to enhance efficiency.
In recent years, SWEPCO has embraced a vision for a sustainable future, diversifying its energy portfolio with investments in renewable resources such as wind and solar power. Brett emphasized the importance of maintaining a reliable energy grid.
To ensure this reliability, SWEPCO plans to replace nearly 22,000 utility poles across its service areas. This work is reinforcing the infrastructure to better handle environmental challenges and keep our system working smoothly, ultimately enhancing the overall customer experience
A Commitment to Community
At the core of SWEPCO's mission is a strong commitment to the communities it serves.
“Our employees donate thousands of hours to ensure we stay plugged in and invested in our communities.” Brett said. “It's very important.”
As SWEPCO celebrates its 113-year legacy, it stands as a beacon of reliability and innovation in the energy sector. With a focus on adapting to the evolving needs of its customers and a steadfast dedication to community service, SWEPCO is poised for a bright future—energizing lives for generations to come!
