FAYETTEVILLE, AR (January 11, 2024) – The American Electric Power (AEP) Foundation, at the recommendation of Southwestern Electric Power Company (SWEPCO), has announced a grant of $10,000 to Girls on the Run Northwest Arkansas, affirming its commitment to the development and empowerment of young girls in Benton, Madison and Washington Counties.

This financial boost from the AEP Foundation will predominantly fund scholarships, making the Girls on the Run program more accessible to those facing financial challenges. Approximately 80% of the participants require such support.

Girls on the Run is not just a fitness initiative; it is an inclusive youth development program that integrates physical activity with crucial life skills for girls in 3rd through 8th grade. The program addresses essential topics such as leadership, self-confidence, conflict resolution and the cultivation of healthy relationships, all within the framework of a running-based curriculum.

Savannah Goins, Executive Director of Girls on the Run of Northwest Arkansas, said the program empowers our future leaders.  “Our curriculum is designed to engage girls in thoughtful discussion on relevant topics while they learn the joy and discipline of running. In today’s digital age, where social media has a profound influence, our aim is to instill confidence and a positive self-image in young girls.”

Bradley Hardin, SWEPCO External Affairs Manager, said he’s proud of the AEP Foundation's support for inclusive and empowering initiatives like Girls on the Run. “Such organizations depend on external funding to be all-inclusive. The AEP Foundation is committed to nurturing wellness and inclusion through these grants,” Hardin said.

The program conducts two sessions each year, culminating in a 5k race. This event, along with the training process, not only builds physical endurance but also imparts valuable life lessons.
